🌐 Resident Spotlight: Indus Shutton MacKay

In June 2025, Casa de Moyo had the pleasure of hosting Indus Shutton MacKay as our third resident artist. After completing a four-week residency with RARO in Buenos Aires, Indus arrived seeking space to reflect on her project titled Female Power Struggle and to share her work with the creative community in Uruguay.

Indus is a graduate in economics with a strong background in visual art. Although her formal art studies were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, she continued to pursue her passion while studying in Madrid, where her interest in the Spanish language and cross-cultural dialogue deepened. She is preparing to resume her academic journey in October, aiming to bring together her interests in art, economics, policy, and the empowerment of women and minority groups.

Her project explores the female experience, drawing from personal, familial, and societal narratives. Central themes in her work include power dynamics, female friendship, memory in physical space, and the intersections of industry and identity. One of her most striking pieces features her grandmother, who worked in the fishing industry. A small square placed inside the larger canvas occupies exactly 50 percent of the space, symbolizing the representation of women in that field. Through subtle forms and meaningful proportion, Indus invites viewers to question how power, visibility, and tradition are shaped by a patriarchal lens.

During her time at Casa de Moyo, Indus shared her work in an intimate art event hosted at our creative space in Carrasco. The evening brought together women from the international community, fellow artists, and local guests, with the support and presence of the British Embassy in Uruguay. She spoke openly about her process, her personal connections to the themes in her work, and her plans to expand her project to explore sexuality, representation in other industries, and how memory and identity live within physical environments.

Indus was joined by her mother and sister for her stay in Uruguay. They spent the week exploring the country, enjoying local food, culture, and the relaxed rhythm of life at Casa de Moyo. Her time with us reflected the essence of what we hope to offer through this residency program: a chance to rest, reconnect, and share meaningful stories through creative expression.

We are excited to follow Indus as she continues to develop her practice and integrate her passions into a path that blends art, advocacy, and global understanding.

🌐 Resident Spotlight – Joanne Frappier

In March 2025, Casa de Moyo had the honor of hosting Joanne Frappier, former Canadian Ambassador to Uruguay, as our second resident artist. She was also the very first overnight guest to stay at Casa de Moyo, helping us shape the early spirit of our program.

Joanne returned to Uruguay to explore the process of glass fusion, working in the glass studio of Claudia, a local master artist. Alongside Tendai, the three spent time experimenting with technique, discussing the use of recycled glass, and exploring alternative kiln-firing methods that aligned with their shared values of creativity and sustainability.

Her residency also included a strong element of community engagement. Joanne spoke to students at a local international school’s Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class, where she shared her experiences leading service projects in Nepal. Her work focused on amplifying the voices of women from disadvantaged backgrounds and using storytelling as a tool for empowerment and change.

During her weekend at Casa de Moyo, Joanne enjoyed warm homemade meals, reflective moments in the garden, and thoughtful exchanges about art and purpose. Her time with us exemplified what Casa de Moyo strives to offer: a residency experience shaped by meaningful dialogue, artistic exploration, and global connection.

🌐 Resident Spotlight: Diego Gutierrez Monterrubio

In March and April 2024, Casa de Moyo welcomed our first artist-in-residence, Diego Gutierrez Monterrubio, a seasoned Mexican-American artist and professor based in Los Angeles. With over 35 years of experience, Diego is known for his bold visual storytelling and exploration of Chicano identity, especially through his series La Fusión de Tres Culturas.

Diego was the first artist to create work at Casa de Moyo, setting the tone for future residencies. He embraced the space to produce new art, drawing inspiration from memory, culture, and environment. During his stay, he collaborated with Tendai to explore new mediums through a glass fusion workshop with local artist Claudia.

He also traveled to Buenos Aires to work at MAGMA / Litografía, a studio founded by master printer Matías Amici, where he created a series of original lithographs. His time in Uruguay included visits to MACA in Punta del Este and a presentation at the American Ambassador’s Residence, where he shared his journey with members of the international and local arts communities.

Throughout his residency, Diego generously shared his process, offering insight into tools like the viewfinder and the use of collage to explore memory and narrative. His time at Casa de Moyo helped define our vision of a residency rooted in creative exploration and cultural exchange.

To see more of Diego’s work, including his series Una Novela de un Amor Eterno, follow his ongoing journey in art and storytelling.
